Toobin Some More...
posted January 26, 2008 by Chris Randall
Just for fun (and mainly because it wasn't there, which annoyed me, because the others are) I slapped the HITG video up on the Tubes. 'Tis here. It's the same file that is on the SMG Visuals page; I just uploaded that cocksucker. Let someone else pay the bandwidth for a change, you know?

I was pondering the fact that I have roughly 300 video tapes of SMG performances, interviews, dog 'n' pony shows, etc. The trauma necessary to import and upload that shit makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit (I don't even own a VHS deck, let alone a 3/4"...) but I might cherry-pick some of the more fun stuff. I'll see if I can't grab a VHS machine at a pawn shop or some shit. Or come to think of it, they're probably like $19 at Circuit City now. Then I have to no doubt buy some USB contraption to actually get the video in to one of my Macs...

sigh.

Perhaps it wouldn't be any fun after all. Well, I'll keep thinking about it.

Don't bother. :) My vote is for time spent on new stuff, not salvaging decade old VHS tapes.

I think it could be a fun little endeavor.

And yes, you can get a VHS/DVD combo in the 30$ range these days. It'll at least take up less space in DVD format, and be a little more resistant to the air around us.

As a musician, I'm sure you know pawn shops better than I, but if I ever had to give out any advice it would be to never buy a VCR at a pawn shop. Particularly if they offer no cash refund, requiring you to exchange it for another piece of broken shit after it destroys the first tape you put in.

There's the main issue. I don't really care about the machine, but many of these tapes are quite literally unique. As in, someone taped a show, and gave me the one and only copy afterwards. I don't want to mess the tapes up at all.

I also video-taped almost every single show we did post-Revolution, except for the DT, where I had too much bullshit to deal with to actually make work for myself. All of this is on Digital8 format, and I have a Digital8 deck with a FW port, so that should be a much simpler matter.

If you are set on this project, I would use something like this VHS/DVD recorder combo. Put in tape, put in blank disc, push "go" and walk away. JVC use to make one that also had a fat harddrive in it for a bit of editing in the middle of that proccess. The Firewire input would probably work with your D8 deck as well.

Why the fuck would I want to put that shit on DVD? One more middleman format that will be obsolete in 5 years. Raw data is the way to go. All of those tapes I have will fit on one .5TB HD if I import for 640x480 29fps MOV (which is actually overkill for VHS x about two.)

Just need some sort of S-Video -> USB dongle that will work with OSX. Going the DVD route, I'll actually have to import twice. Once for the DVD, and then again to get the parts I want to put to YouTube out. Fuck that noise.

Quick and dirty, you could just take the RCA out from the VHS deck into the input of a miniDV hooked into FW. My Canon will pass that input signal straight through the FW without first recording it to miniDV.

My Digital8 deck will do that as well, but I'd rather get something suited to the task, else it creates all sorts of problems, plus it's a PITA. I'm sure there's a better way, and it's not like I'm short of cash or anything.

That acoustic SMG show from that Posi convention you did would be cool...the setlist looked interesting (this was pre-me-moving-to-chicago natch).

I THOUGHT I heard/saw something on here about a video that was gonna be made for Burn (or I'm making this up, both are entirely possible).

Wasn't there a remix for "Think" by some Iowa band too?

Cirrus did a Think remix which TVT didn't care for, and didn't release. They only sent one DAT, which I sent along to TVT (this was 1997, of course. To turn a DAT in to a CD was some drama.) So I don't have that.

There is a Burn video. With any luck, you'll never see it. I'll have to dig through my shit to find a video of that acoustic set. If memory serves me correctly, we forgot to turn on the video camera. Not sure about that, though.
