So, Year Zero is actually pretty damn good. IMO, better than With Teeth, though no Fragile. Who would've thought that Trent could actually put together a good album in two years?

I just saw The Frames last night. What an awesome show. I got called-out, however, by the singer...durring the show...for weaing a Motorhead t-shirt. "I don't know if you're really singing along or not, but I respect that you're here." he he

Year Zero has more distortion than I thought Trent would ever put into anything. So much of it is just noise and random grinding... I like it, I like it alot.
The message of the album is quite loud and clear, and my only complaint would be that he says the same thing over and over again from start to finish. I understood the theme in the first 2 songs...shake it up a little. I agree, it is better than With Teeth, and I honestly feel it is better on many levels than most of Trent's previous work, but it is no Fragile. Caiptal G is one of my favorite Nails songs ever...

Now on a completely unrelated note- I was turned onto Mika - Life in Cartoon Motion over the weekend. If you are into oddball pop, this album has it all. It is fun and upbeat in most parts, it has a couple of real catchy chorus lines, and it even includes a fairly good DMB cover. Check it out if get the chance.

Goddamn, Alice Russell has one hell of a voice. Here's one of those covers that's better than the original:

Heh. It's like the politics thread turned into an album. Probably why I like it. Seriously, at least it's not the same introspective angst that just about every other Nails lyric has been about.

Man, that Alice Russell record is THE SHIT. Thanks for turning me on to that. Never heard of her before. She's like a chick version of Jamie Liddell. Sort of.

I actually just discovered her myself last week when I 'found' this comp:

Her track on that is definitely a high point, but surprisingly there's like three or four other excellent tracks on it as well. That's not really what I was expecting from something with a cover that practically screams 'Starbucks Music.'

There's a local singer here in Memphis named Holly Cole (not the jazz singer) who sounds like Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donnelly at the same time. She opened for the band I'm in and did a stellar version of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow".

Are we allowed to put up a link here to her MySpace? I don't know if anyone'd be interested but I was impressed.
